I started with the basic FET, LED and battery circuit. The disadvantage of that is that the light is on when there is no static, and off when there is static. I think that is the wrong way round, so I improved it.
In my version, the FET is connected to a transistor, creating a NOT gate which inverts the output. I used p-channel and n-channel FETs to detect + and - charges.
