If any school-leaver who has strong practical skills and who does not want - or cannot afford - to go to Univ. - and asks my advice of what line of work he should go in for, I would strongly recommend those industries that are associated with energy supply - electricity & gas - and water. These are the essentials for life and there will always be a demand for skilled technicians and engineers in these fields. Agreed, some of the trades in these industries are not brilliantly well-paid and they often don't have much 'status', but I believe that these trades have the greatest resilience to unemployment compared to the many so-called 'skilled' employments that young people end up in, having left Univ.
