Actually Terry it is less than 10mA even at a reasonable listening level with radio a few feet from you, measured on my DMM, the bench supply must have been a bit out at this low level. But obviously it would increase if the volume was turned up to loud.
I would have used a couple of quad AA holders if I had them to hand, but to be honest I dont expect this radio to be used as the only thing it receives which Gill listens to is the Archers on R4, and she always seems to listen to that when it is not live on the radio, so she tends to stream it on her Iphone.
I assume the output capacitors can stay in circuit whichever battery arrangement is used.
