I've heard of brass cores but never aluminium before. I'm surprised that the tuning range of the 5.5MHz coils was so tight that they wouldn't reach 6MHz (the PYE export sets that I realigned didn't need any cores to be changed).
Presumably, aluminium doesn't alter the inductance as much as brass which might have swung them too far the other way?
