It's not a case of being beaten its a case of often why bother in the first place? You have already found out there is no service manual, so there is most likely no parts back up, could you source T2 for example. I rarely do repairs these days, if I do I take a reasonable non returnable deposit and properly charge. Yesterday I delivered a TV22 to Glasgow, the bill was well into three figures.
Personally id either take up Marks offer or hand it back saying there is no info on the unit, which is actually the truth.
