I believe that a few Ever Ready sets pre WWII used side contact valves as did Lissen who were closely associated at the time. Possibly Pye too.
It's an interesting set apparently with push-pull EL3 output.
The reservoir / smoothing cap being mounted remotely from everything else has a Philips feel to it, but the energised speaker doesn't.
