Even easier in the US.
They had at least one range of valves where the heater voltages of a set of four + rectifier neatly added up to 117V, so no mains dropper needed for a standard 4 + 1 AM radio design, some of which were very compact.
Some of these sets appeared in the UK after WWII but, as there was nowhere suitable for the mains dropper we needed in the small cabinet, a special mains lead with the live wire comprising resistance wire wound on asbestos string was used to drop the surplus and thus ran rather warm.
These seemed to work well provided that the customer didn't shorten the mains lead or run it under the carpet!
