I agree with you Ed, it's doubtful if the PP3 capacity is really that good especially as this time I just used GP Zinc Carbon types, at least it alerted me to a problem in the set.
All the DF96's in the set have now a 10K and a 1nf added to the G2's. This has reduced the G2 volts to around 68 volts, a little higher than the spec but a noticeable reduction in current.
I think I'll build a mains PSU for the set as I doubt very much if I'll use the set for any serious direction finding.
