I jumped in my car at 8.15 this morning, completely forgetting the radio was still tuned to 648kHz - and there was Caroline, loud and clear! (Well, perhaps a little mush if the truth be told.) Certainly no trace of CCI.
I was also interested to hear Ray Clarke's voice on my way into Lincoln on a prerecorded identity announcement. Ray started his broadcasting career under an assumed name on Caroline from the Ross Revenge many years ago and has since worked on BBC Local Radio Stations like Radio Cambridgeshire and BBC Essex. Now officially retired, he still does a Saturday morning programme on BBC Essex.
Only when I cut across Lincoln City centre did I have any problems and I'm reasonably sure that it was a set of traffic lights which finally killed it.
When I returned a little before one o'clock, Caroline was still coming in well, including across the city (by a different route) but there was something else - a pulsating burst of noise in the background. By the time I got home, some modulation was becoming apparent - it was that unlocked carrier again but today it was only about one Hertz off channel.
I meant to try it indoors this afternoon but I was busy and it slipped my mind. I don't fancy my chances against the CCI now!
