What an odd comment. I've been there, done that and designed it for a living, and I never had any problems with fully synchronos designs. After all, the likes of PDP-11s were designed and buit with it, and I don't rememebr them suffering from any such problems.
I also used to use Altera FPGAs - very swish in their day. I don't know what they're like these days.
Finally, I've done a lot of designs with PICs, for the same reasons as above. They work fine, and the languages available appear to me to be much more readable.
