I concur with you regarding "flashing" the AF117's. As a rule I'd rather substitute a germanium for another germanium for instance an AF127 or one of the many Russian GT322 types that appear on eBay. I gave up using silicon transistors as replacements when a couple of sets wouldn't work as the mixer oscillator didn't run and others were markedly lower gain even after realignment.
