Your multimeter must be connected across the link. As it is, you're measuring the current draw of the whole set, not the output transistors in isolation.
I did see the other thread on UKVRRR, but decided that it's too complicated to get involved with remote fault-finding - I'd need the set in front of me. It's probably something simple - as most faults usually are - but getting to it is the challenge.
Getting hold of an identical set to compare is a useful approach (can never have too many Hackers!).
Oh, there's no need to manually bridge pins 4 and 5, as that's what happens when you turn the volume to minimum
