Don't quite understand the LT arrangement. Not sure what a Motorola 839 is. Google doesn't give instant answers. A pair of alkaline cells gives about 3.2V when fresh 3V for much of their life, so an ordinary 1N4001 etc diode will drop it to about 2.6V. If they're NiMH the voltage is a little lower, say 2.4V, so no dropper needed.
