The only difference is that on normal Russian rod tubes the two plates either side of filament are connected. On the 1j37b and 1j42a each is connected separately, so a differential voltage (in EITHER direction) decreases Ia beam current and increases Ig2, because the g2 rods are on both sides of beam.
The 1j42a has enhanced geometry compared to 1j37b, which is based on 1j17b
The schematics I have for Russian Military Radio are too big for here. I will load them to my own site, maybe next week.
Yes, of course what you are doing works. It's also much more distorted and poorer audio gain than the "proper" way. You can't see distortion on modulation on a scope unless it's very severe.
