Thanks Jeffrey, I do agree with you that monostables are certainly not items I would expect to see in professional designs but they are very tempting for this type of hobby application in offering a cheap and simple solution. 

The graphics route does give rather better bandwidth than other signal sources. Please excuse the upside down photo but rather than take the image via the mirror on the HMV901 this direct view gives my simple camera a better chance of focus.
