As for ground plane reflectors, the Irish Sea was fantastic, with Radio Caroline North moored slap bang in the middle of it. Our Scout Troop were camping at Anzio in 1964 and the only UK transmission I could receive was Murph the Surf's Midnight Surf Party from Caroline North.
1250 miles on 10kW! (Caroline and the Mi Amigo both had 10kW transmitters initially although they were later upgraded to 50kW. US backed Radio London was the first UK pirate with a 50kW transmitter.)
