Recently I was thinking about getting a Now TV box to watch a series that isn't on Freeview, but they only output HDMI.
I looked at the cheap HDMI converters, but unfortunately they are composite only. Not a big problem for Mike perhaps, as that's the current connection (over RF), but would have been a step back for me.
Also, there were some complaints about motion artefacts. Not knowing what these boxes might be doing in terms of frame buffering and perhaps I to P conversion, I decided against it. Plus the added video delay would cause lip-sync problems. Instead, I'm waiting for the DVDs to be released!
If you replace a decent CRT with an LCD, bear in mind that that will be a step backwards in picture quality terms, especially if the feed continues to be analogue RF. The signal processing in these sets usually exaggerates PAL footprint, and they do a poor job with old stuff shot on grainy film. Compounding that, everyone always buys sets that are bigger than what they had before.
So if you can't get a box outputting RGB or HDMI directly into the telly, I'd be really quite worried about the sort of picture you'll end up with.
Let alone the sound quality...
