Sounds close to home. All my boatbuilding work was inspired by the 1930's alternative housing trend in New York. Skilled workers making their own homes and adapting.
I agree the Cold War forced America to invest in technology but there was some sanity about it. I think America is now in serious decline. I see the peak of industrialised electronics as led by Japan in the 1980's where Panasonic and Sony produced all those cameras and TV sets. VCR also a big industry. Evidently digital caught Japan off guard since motorised, engineered products were substituted by boards and chip circuits glued together by semi skilled assemblers in Asia. This is why I love those old pocket, sixties tranys. I have one Bush dated 69 and works fine. We only had 3 TV stations with real decent programs like Wickers World and Star Trek.
