This sounds a bit odd - fitting a high output cartridge and then knocking its output down by fitting a series resistor.
The input should be as high a value as possible to maintain the bass response - 1M should be ok. What exactly is the cartridge feeding into in the HMV?
I would certainly bypass the 330k and judge the results in a listening test.
