Further checks prove that the amp. is working OK, producing a healthy output when fed with a 1kHz sinewave test tone @ ca.100mV to the i/p lead. Frequency response is reasonable for this type of amp, falling off above about 9kHz. I have replaced the 5000pf red ceramic cap across the o/p transformer primary with a 4n7 1kV yellow axial type, though the original cap checks OK on my cheap Chinese tester. Now to build it back into the cabinet and listen to a few records on it!
