Another vote here for Art of Electronics. The old edition is great but some of component selections and data is dated - having said that, it's cheap as many have sold their old editions to buy the new one and all the stuff you need is still valid in the old edition. The new edition is great but expensive.
As Mark and others have said. Keep life simple. AoE is the book you need, start with AF and look at simple amplifiers, sine and squarewave generators, multivibrators, switches etc.
Add some LEDs to your kit (different colours have slightly different characteristics), a small 2" or 3" speaker, a small microphone (note again the different mics gave different characteristics).
Those prototyping plugboards, whilst great for AF are no use at all for RF (too much stray capacitance) - different techniques are needed for RF and you're some way off that at the moment.
