If you want to try your hand at building transistor radios don't try to be ambitious for a start, good results can be had from quite simple sets, a single general purpose silicon transistor in a regenerative set can give good local station service from just a ferrite rod antenna. A small three transistor class B audio amp that will drive a speaker from a receiver like that would be a good starting point.
Also beware of circuits that are posted on the net, although they are a great source of inspiration they should be viewed as such, as often they lack the details necessary for a novice to create a working device. A lot, unfortunately, will just not work.
Unless you are able to test any scavenged transistors you find, I would recommend that you get a bag each of general purpose NPN and PNP types to experiment with, BC547/557 similar to the 2N3904, 2N3906 are good and are pennies each.
Also although not great for RF work one of those little plugin bread boarding systems are excellent for trying your circuits out on.
And please just get yourself a copy of The Art of Electronics or even the student manual for it, constantly going from one learning method to another and trying to equate one to another is not helpful.
