I now know what the 0.98 figure is in the ARRL semiconductor chapter. They just pulled it out of thin air. The Beta was cited as 50. On an idle day, sat with my dog, I did some research and found some handy lessons online. So, now it's clear. For me a good way was to deduce current values from other figures given. Doing a few sums you can see how the base, emitter and collector currents relate. It's amazing how many sums I had to do to get the idea. Good job my mobile has a calculator.
