As peter said, the 240 line system only needs 1.8MHz or so of bandwidth to give the same H resolution as 405 with over 3MHz. It's hardly surprising that when it was a struggle to get both BW and gain that 240 could look very good. I think we had a touch of that in the UK during the 405 to 625 changeover where a lot of sets suffered from relatively poor pictures on 625. Aggravated by early insensitive valve UHF tuners. Remember you need about 5MHz BW on 625 to equal 3MHz on 405.
