I agree that alpha is predictable, it's near enough unity in all modern transistors. That's fine for common base amplifiers but doesn't help you for common emitter amplifiers.

Incidentally you might as well say that a valve is current operated when it's in grounded grid mode. Its "alpha" is exactly unity for a triode
