What's strange is the image was discovered following on from interference through TRF radios. It was simply discovered that feedback on grid leak radios was transmitting the original broadcast on a different frequency. So mostly we winded up with 455 KHz to reproduce the transmission on, say, 7000 KHz. And yes the image here would be not that far away. It's funny really but radio theory is taught but isn't it the case here this was simply evolution through observation? If your neighbour was adjusting feedback on a TRF and then you picked up a broadcast on a different frequency (via his radio oscillation), well it's clear something is afoot.
