Someone - I think it was Philips - used to use a two-pin version of this but I've never seen the three-pin one on anything.
It is recessed like a French mains socket except, of course, that in this case it is a plug. Would an Australian line socket mate with this?
I doubt it, bearing in mind that this is what a wall mounted socket looks like:
