Anode loading. Without the 12BH7, the ECC82 anode load includes the 1K grid stopper and 12K cathode resistor as the diode is forward biased. This pulls down the anode voltage and thus the cathode too.
With the 12BH7 in situ, the diode is reverse biased and we're back to just grid current.
