There's a fascination video from Tektronix (if you can stand the ghastly '60s background "music") about making ceramic CRTs, specifically why it was done.

I've come across plenty of glass envelopes and a few metal cones but I don't think I ever handled a ceramic one. It's terrible how much we take for granted of these highly complex manufactures.
I see (or hear) what you mean about the "passage of time" music.
