The transformer will either be duff or it won't, connect the primary to the mains via a suitable fuse then measure the secondary voltages (AC), between red to red, it should measure approx. 500 volts AC, between either of the reds to black should read approx. 250 volts AC, between the two greys should read approx. 5 volts AC if that's the 5 volt winding, measuring the blue, green and white might take a bit of try it and see, if it's the economy type as in the link I posted then try measuring between the white and the green and the white and the blue (the thick blue) you might be looking at approx. 6.3 volts AC measured in both those cases, if the voltage is not that then post up the measurements on the forum, these are all AC voltage measurements, no polarity, meter set to measure AC voltage.
