I've tended to use my hi-fi as a test amp as well and have a connector in one of the speaker cables so that can be tapped into too.
This job evolved and grew as it started as simple plan to make a case purely to physically protect the speaker. I then though I may as well make it look decent and then the amplifier idea struck and then I kept adding refinements to that. I just can't believe how good it sounds as it was dirt cheap - the components can't be worth more than a quid - and designed by guess-work. I certainly know NOTHING about speaker enclosure design.
Thanks for your suggestions, Mark. I'll await the breadboard as messing about on veroboard is courting disaster. I know you know your onions with regards to PSUs so how about telling us (sans maths!) why things like de-coupling are needed. I've never seen the point of putting a cap across a battery as it's as smooth as it gets and there won't be any mains-borne interference coming from it. In fact it would contribute to turn-on transients by taking time to charge. Obviously there are good reasons but I don't know what they are.
The same went for stereo mixing resistors until I read how not having them shortened the life of your radio batteries.
That's the beauty of this forum as we can all learn from each other as all have different experience and areas of interest.
