Massive inrush currents and back EMF off chokes and transformers I think are responsible.
RCDs are a worthy safety addition but, my, don't they cause some problems now.
I was always surprised that the ELCBs were replaced with RCDs and RCBOs, they caused me less problem. Now retired, I could not care less, I just work with one hand!
