I have several 12V halogen spots in my workshop. They were originally supplied from a horrible radiating switch-mode supply. I replaced that with a nice clean toroidal 300W transformer so that I could once again use my AM radios.
Unfortunately, the inrush current on switching on the lights would then often cause the RCD to trip, depending, I guess, on the direction of the core's residual magnetisation after it was last switched off. The solution was to fit a suitably rated NTC thermistor in series with the transformer mains primary to limit the inrush current.
