Radars don't guide ships safely! They are a valuable tool in safety, but until recently, the information had to be interpreted correctly by the officer of the watch, and could lead to radar-assisted collisons such as Andrea Doria and Stockholm. Nowadays, with modern radars, you "acquire" the targets, and the radar tells you their course, speed etc and whether they represent a collision threat. The modern officer of the watch is then lulled into a false sense of security, and if the system fails, they are back to the old ways, with which they cannot always cope!
In 1992, I had had enough, and quit the rat race at the age of 48, after 32 years at sea. Since then, I have been very suspicious of all this "high technology!"
