Beam and terracotta blocks were common and a pest to drill through, the hollow blocks used to break up too easily. We did a conversion of a prewar block of flats that had rampant dry rot fungus running through the cavities, had to drill thousands of holes for injecting fungicide. And then stop them up again!
You found the problem with the old soft iron pipe then? Fortunately its not so common. We used to drill and tap when we found it and fit a brass 22mm compression tank connector, it was a faff starting the thread on the round but looked good fitted.
Cowboys chop out a section of pipe and bodge in a junction, or insist on replacing the stack with plastic. Often they would just replace the bottom section leaving the weight of the cast iron above resting on the plastic.
Seen a strap on rodding access butchered on with a disk cutter and drilled for the waste pipe, not pretty.
Pitch fibre and cement asbestos present difficulties too.
So you are nearly done then?
