Ah, the crazy world of vintage rack gear, I don't understand musician's and recording tech's obsession with wanting to sound retro; how to sound like Hendrix or Page or wanting compression or a mic as used on Beatles record's. With all the technical option's we have , why not make your own sound? The tech's at EMI wouldn't be using a horrible valve compressor given the choice between a Vintage Altec and a modern SS/Digital compressor. One reason is if you have vintage mic's and rack gear in your studio, it bring's the big band's/Artist's in, looks good on the website.
Anyway, rant over, there's a bloke called Ian (Ruffrecords) over on GroupDIY who really know's his early recording gear as used at Abbey Road circa 60's. He would be worth getting in touch with or you may get your answer over on the GroupDIY forum.
Andy.
