Radio Caroline used compressors with a very short attack time. However, in the early days they sometimes played a Ted Heath track which had a couple of loud bursts of cymbals, which sent the compressors crazy!
Carl Thompson lived very near me though, being a couple of years younger we moved in different circles as kids!
One day he came into our workshop, looking for some switches, and I asked him what was going on.
He explained that the compressors were set up for 100% modulation at 1kHz!
100% we said? I spotted a Bush TR90 on the bench right next to the scope. In short order we were looking at 100% modulation with a probe clipped on the IF!
Obviously, when those cymbals turned up, the compressor had to do something prtetty drastic!
