I seem to recall the AF177's used coloured leads. There were four of them. Contrary to the bad press, the AF transistors I found to be bullet proof. I have an awesome early sixties car radio with AF transistors and so far they still work OK.
However the dot markings will help me with the Top Hats. Actually I found the Astrad a difficult radio to take apart. I almost accidentally loosened the wrong grub screw on the waveband shaft. My eyes are pretty poor. The knob is removed via a recessed latter grubscrew. Those were a bit rusty and you have to angle the screwdriver.
Inside I found it a bit space age. These Russian trannys were being produced in the Sputnik and Gagarin era. Types such as Festival or Zvezda. They reflect the drive towards a scientific society. Maybe the waveband system was deliberately made complex for effect.
There is more to Soviet radio than meets the eye. There are many Soviet trannys to rival Japanese and other equivalents. Except the Japanese had a marketing edge. By the way there are also good USSR telescopes such as Turist.
