One of the common causes of failure with my boiler is for the tiny holes in the pilot jet to get blocked. This happened again recently and the boiler would light and run for a short time then shut down. The sequence is easy to understand. The pilot jet lights but only partially. The main jet lights and reduces the pressure at the pilot so now there is insufficient flame at the flame failure device and the boiler shuts down.
Putting the pilot jet up to the light (it's removable) I (oops sorry, a gas engineer) can often see daylight through the jet even though it is blocked. I think some of the crud from combustion can leave transparent blockages so be sure to run a small wire through it even if it looks clear.
