I was driving a Vauxhall Midi - so this would be about 20 years ago - to an event at Duxford. Just before we got to the car park, the engine warning light came on. The handbook said not to drive it, so we went the event at the airfield and called out the RAC when it was over.
When he arrived he gave it a quick check over and asked when it had last been serviced - which was about a fortnight before, by the main dealer.
He pointed to the odometer which read just over 50,000 miles and said the light came on at 50,000 as a warning to replace the timing belt, but it should be safe to drive it home ...
... idiots at the garage had changed the timing belt but forgot to reset the alarm ...
Of course, being a company vehicle, I didn't get to see the invoice so had no way of knowing what work had been carried out.
