I've just spent the evening trying to find the source of some 50Hz hum in a vintage audio pre-amp. It turns out that if the single-pole mains switch is used to switch the neutral then there's a lot less hum than if it's used to switch the live. Sometimes 'not bothering' can have consequences :-).
