On the subject of junction diodes being used as varicaps I was sent some 60S06 6amp rectifier diodes from NJS by a friend in the USA, some of which have a junction capacitance of 200pf down to 20pf at 30v, haven't tried them in a tank circuit yet but they look promising.
Back to topic, hat tip to Terry for his cool little project I think I'll give one a try. I've also been looking at Trevor's pantry transmitter with a view to a build if those rod pentodes I ordered ever turn up
