a) Who says they do? What is the evidence?
b) "marker pen" is a very generic term as different inks, pigments, solvents etc are used. So even in unlikely event that one formulation is "bad", another may fine.
I use either "correction fluid" or a white marker sold for whitening grouting or an Edding brand white paint pen. All easily scraped off. I often add my own serial number prefixed with # and only unique per valve type to associate with uTester set of save files.
Some kinds of glues for base or top cap are bad, possibly superglue. Epoxy (but not mixed to set quickly or too warm till set as fast setting can crack the epoxy!) and "contact adhesive" (never goes completely hard). I think the original "glue" might have been a mix of wood powder or flour mixed with shellac, or other varnish.
