Decided to have a look at the temperature sensor which seemed to be reading rather high. Also check the bleed point on the combustion chamber. Took case off boiler, no air at bleed. The temperature gauge wasn't lying when it gave a reading in the high 40s. The combustion chamber exit, indeed the whole combustion chamber, was hot. Didn't bother to check with IR thermometer as it was obvious that the temperature reading was about right.
A mystery. The flow and return pipes are cool to the touch, about the same as the gas pipe. The combustion chamber is hot. The boiler has been off for over 3 hours, the case isn't especially insulated, the boiler is sitting there doing nothing. There certainly shouldn't be any gas being burned. What on earthis happening? I've turned off the boiler's gas cock and wil leave it that way for a few hours to see if it all cools down.
PS: For "combustion chamber" please read "heat exchanger". The burner assembly is also warm but slightly cooler than the heat exchanger.
