I've seen 3 or 4 installations where the DHW cylinder was in the loft. Unusual but nothing wrong with it. The cold water cistern has to be raised on a platform to get it above the cylinder. This method gains the space that would have been used for an airing cupboard etc but of course you don't get a nice warm airing cupboard. However well** you insulate the cylinder and its pipework the airing cupboard will always be warm.
