I was offered an apprenticeship with the local radio & TV repair shop, but I had set my mind on going to sea. Every Saturday, my friend & I would go into town and do the rounds of the surplus radio shops and the junk stalls on the market (I still go to them every Tuesday, but they call it a "car boot sale" now
). Our favourite shop was Parson's on the corner of Saul Street Preston. I also liked going to Lisle Street and Little Newport Street in London, and also visiting the surplus radio stores in Liverpool, Newport and Glasgow when my ship called there!
