I imagine that that this Dynatron Merlin console receiver would fall into the aspirational class:
At the time of its release, it probably had the Dynatron T69 tuner/control unit, but later editions likely had the T99.
Here is another highly specified model from the same era, the Ace 600:
Both of the above are probably as scarce as hen’s teeth, though.
Of those from the mass producers, and basis only its circuit and description, the AM-only Murphy A188C strikes me as having been a well thought-out model. The RF section was three-gang with a bandpass input. And the IF was variable selectivity, with I’d guess 10 kHz audio bandwidth or close thereto in the wide position. The output was push-pull, with a 9 kHz notch filter in the feedback loop.
As already noted, the later FM-AM A272C, which appears to have been the successor to the A188C, was simpler, using a mostly standard circuit with single-ended output. I say mostly standard, because in a predominantly noval valve circuit, Murphy was still using the “brute force” Mazda 6C9 Rimlock frequency changer, as well as an octal output valve and a Rimlock rectifier.
The A272C was a contemporary of the FM-only Ekco C273, which also used a standard single-ended circuit, but which I think had a more complex speaker system.
I suspect that there were not too many other console receivers available by 1956; evidently they were a dying breed.
