The designer of that TX on Radiomusuem has done a very thorough job. The 6AS6 is a relatively unusual valve, design for dual grid control: http://www.r-type.org/exhib/aaa0065.htm so it's unlikely a commonplace EF91 or EF80 would work so well. Some frequency changer valves ought to work.
