I had a Acer Aspire 1, the 4G Flash is too small, and even 8G is rather limiting for Puppy.
I concluded that to be able to upgrade the linux or add patches in place and have space for applications that a minimum of 32G Byte was needed. The cheapest solution was a ZIF cable and CF socket instead of the supplied Flash memory, and then a 32G CF card.
Runs Linux Mint with Mate desktop fine and I was able to upgrade from 17.2 to 17.3 in place, on it.
8G is really too small for XP or anything later than a Router OS, an ancient Linux or Windows 2000. Though better than the stupidly small 4G on the Acer.
The original Raspberry Pi very hampered by being only 4G. You really have to build a fresh download distro on PC to the SD card.
I notice many Android tablets are only 0.5G RAM and 8G Flash, which leaves only 3G free for applications. The minimum worth buying for Android is 1G RAM and 16G Flash (then 11G free).
Unless you rebuild a Download on PC and don't want much applications, for Linux better to have 1G RAM and 32G flash minimum, though 16G is just viable.
