I have compared small PCB transformers with the genuine article (taken from the small valve suitcase portables), and have never been able to distinguish any difference in performance! I have found that seconadries from about 3 volts to 15 volts work equally well. Those small PSUs are a fantastic source of cheap transfomrers because twice a week on our local giant car boot sale there are boxes and boxes of them between 50p and a couple of pounds each! Quite often, the rectifier circuits have failed, but I have never yet had a dud transformer!
